Vulnerability discussion

The information security architecture at the individual information system level must be consistent with and complement the more global, organization-wide information security architecture that is integral to and developed as part of the enterprise architecture. The information security architecture includes an architectural description, the placement/allocation of security functionality (including security controls), security-related information for external interfaces, information being exchanged across the interfaces, and the protection mechanisms associated with each interface. In addition, the security architecture can include other important security-related information, for example, user roles and access privileges assigned to each role; unique security requirements; the types of information processed, stored, and transmitted by the information system; restoration priorities of information and information system services; and any other specific protection needs. All residual data (data that is unintentionally left behind on computer media) must be cleared before transitioning from one period/network to the next. Since the equipment is reused, non-destructive techniques are used. According to NIST Special Publication 800-88:"Clearing information is a level of media sanitization that would protect the confidentiality of information against a robust keyboard attack. Simple deletion of items would not suffice for clearing. Clearing must not allow information to be retrieved by data, disk, or file recovery utilities. It must be resistant to keystroke recovery attempts executed from standard input devices and from data scavenging tools. For example, overwriting is an acceptable method for clearing media."

Check content

If the Voice Video system does not implement a single CODEC supporting conferences on multiple networks having different classification levels, this is not applicable. Review the Voice Video SSP for the system. Confirm an approved automatic capability for sanitation exists and review documentation to determine whether this capability is being implemented before transitioning from one period/network to the next. If no automatic capability exists, review organizational documentation to determine whether a manual procedure is specified and implemented before transitioning from one period/network to the next. Coordinate with the vendor/solutions provider and certifier to ensure all residual information is sanitized based on equipment make and model. In all cases, Periods Processing must sanitize all information while transitioning from one period/network to the next. If an automatic capability exists and is being implemented, this is not a finding. If an automatic capability exists but is not being implemented, this is a finding unless a manual procedure is specified and is being implemented. If a manual procedure is specified and is being implemented, this is not a finding. If the Voice Video SSP does not have a procedure specified or none is being implemented, this is a finding.

Fix text

Obtain equipment that has an automatic capability to sanitize memory or implement and document a manual procedure in the Voice Video SSP. Implement the automatic capability or manual procedure to sanitize all information while transitioning from one period/network to the next. Document the solution in the Voice Video SSP for this system.

Pro Tips

Lavender hyperlinks in small type off to the right (of CSS class id, if you view the page source) point to globally unique URIs for each document and item. Copy the link location and paste anywhere you need to talk unambiguously about these things.

You can obtain data about documents and items in other formats. Simply provide an HTTP header Accept: text/turtle or Accept: application/rdf+xml.
