Vulnerability discussion

Unnecessary services increase the attack surface of a system. Some services may be run under the local System account, which generally has more permissions than required by the service. Compromising a service could allow an intruder to obtain system permissions and open the system to a variety of attacks.

Required services will vary between organizations, and on the role of the individual system. Organizations will develop their own list of services which will be documented and justified with the IAO. The Site’s list will be provided for any security review. Services common to multiple systems can be addressed in one document. Exceptions for individual systems should be identified separately by system. Individual services specifically required to be disabled per the STIG are identified in separate requirements. If the site has not documented the services required for their system(s), this is a finding. The following can be used to view the services on a system: Select “Start”. Select “Run”. Enter "Services.msc" in the run box. Respond to any User Account Control prompts. Services for Windows Server 2008 R2 roles are managed automatically, adding those necessary for a particular role. The following tables list the default services for a baseline installation and those for common roles as a reference. This can be used as a basis for documenting the services necessary. Fix text

Document the services required for the system to operate. Remove or disable any services that are not required.

Pro Tips

Lavender hyperlinks in small type off to the right (of CSS class id, if you view the page source) point to globally unique URIs for each document and item. Copy the link location and paste anywhere you need to talk unambiguously about these things.

You can obtain data about documents and items in other formats. Simply provide an HTTP header Accept: text/turtle or Accept: application/rdf+xml.
