Vulnerability discussion

ICMP redirect messages are used by routers to inform hosts that a more direct route exists for a particular destination. These messages modify the host's route table and are unauthenticated. An illicit ICMP redirect message could result in a man-in-the-middle attack.

Check content

Verify the system ignores IPv4 ICMP redirect messages. Check the value of the "accept_redirects" variables with the following command: # /sbin/sysctl -a | grep 'net.ipv4.conf.all.accept_redirects' net.ipv4.conf.all.accept_redirects=0 If the returned line does not have a value of "0", or a line is not returned, this is a finding.

Fix text

Set the system to ignore IPv4 ICMP redirect messages by adding the following line to "/etc/sysctl.conf" (or modify the line to have the required value): net.ipv4.conf.all.accept_redirects = 0

Pro Tips

Lavender hyperlinks in small type off to the right (of CSS class id, if you view the page source) point to globally unique URIs for each document and item. Copy the link location and paste anywhere you need to talk unambiguously about these things.

You can obtain data about documents and items in other formats. Simply provide an HTTP header Accept: text/turtle or Accept: application/rdf+xml.
