Vulnerability discussion

Without establishing the source of the event, it is impossible to establish, correlate, and investigate the events leading up to an outage or attack. In order to compile an accurate risk assessment and provide forensic analysis, security personnel need to know the source of the event. In addition to logging where events occur within the network, the traffic log records must also identify sources of events, such as IP addresses, processes, and node or device names.

Check content

Examine the traffic log configuration on the firewall or view several alert records on the organization's central event log server. Verify the entries sent to the traffic log include sufficient information to ascertain the source of the events (e.g., IP address, session, or packet ID). If the traffic log event records do not include sufficient information to ascertain the source of the events, this is a finding.

Fix text

Configure the firewall implementation to ensure entries sent to the audit log include sufficient information to ascertain the source of each audit event (e.g., IP address, session, or packet ID).

Pro Tips

Lavender hyperlinks in small type off to the right (of CSS class id, if you view the page source) point to globally unique URIs for each document and item. Copy the link location and paste anywhere you need to talk unambiguously about these things.

You can obtain data about documents and items in other formats. Simply provide an HTTP header Accept: text/turtle or Accept: application/rdf+xml.
