SV-38904r1_rule System audit logs must have mode 0640 or less permissive.

Vulnerability discussion

If a user can write to the audit logs, audit trails can be modified or destroyed and system intrusion may not be detected. System audit logs are those files generated from the audit system and do not include activity, error, or other log files created by application software.

Check content

Perform the following to determine the location of audit logs and then check the mode of the files. Procedure: # grep -p bin: /etc/security/audit/config Directories to search will be listed under the bin stanza. # ls -la If any audit log file has a mode more permissive than 0640, this is a finding.

Fix text

Change the mode of the audit log directories/files. # chmod 0750 # chmod 0640

Pro Tips

Lavender hyperlinks in small type off to the right (of CSS class id, if you view the page source) point to globally unique URIs for each document and item. Copy the link location and paste anywhere you need to talk unambiguously about these things.

You can obtain data about documents and items in other formats. Simply provide an HTTP header Accept: text/turtle or Accept: application/rdf+xml.
