SV-100277r1_rule The xinetd.conf file, and the xinetd.d directory must be owned by root or bin.

Vulnerability discussion

Failure to give ownership of sensitive files or utilities to root provides the designated owner and unauthorized users with the potential to access sensitive information or change the system configuration, which could weaken the system's security posture.

Check content

Check the owner of the "xinetd" configuration files: # ls -lL /etc/xinetd.conf # ls -laL /etc/xinetd.d This is a finding if any of the above files or directories are not owned by "root" or "bin".

Fix text

Change the owner of the "xinetd" configuration files: # chown root /etc/xinetd.conf /etc/xinetd.d/*

Pro Tips

Lavender hyperlinks in small type off to the right (of CSS class id, if you view the page source) point to globally unique URIs for each document and item. Copy the link location and paste anywhere you need to talk unambiguously about these things.

You can obtain data about documents and items in other formats. Simply provide an HTTP header Accept: text/turtle or Accept: application/rdf+xml.
