Vulnerability discussion

Backups to remote systems (including cloud backup) can leave data vulnerable to breach on the external systems, which often offer less protection than the MOS. Where the remote backup involves a cloud-based solution, the backup capability is often used to synchronize data across multiple devices. In this case, DoD devices may synchronize DoD-sensitive information to a user's personal device or other unauthorized computers that are vulnerable to breach. Disallowing remote backup mitigates this risk.SFR ID: FMT_SMF_EXT.1.1 #40

Check content

Review configuration settings to confirm iCloud Backup is disabled. This check procedure is performed on both the Apple iOS management tool and the Apple iOS device. Note: If an organization has multiple configuration profiles, the check procedure must be performed on the relevant configuration profiles applicable to the scope of the review. In the Apple iOS management tool, verify "Allow iCloud backup" is unchecked. Alternatively, verify the text "allowCloudBackup " appears in the configuration profile (.mobileconfig file). On the Apple iOS device: 1. Open the Settings app. 2. Tap "General". 3. Tap "Profiles" or "Profiles & Device Management" or "Device Management". 4. Tap the Configuration Profile from the iOS management tool containing the policy. 5. Verify "iCloud backup not allowed". If "Allow iCloud backup" is checked in the Apple iOS management tool, "allowCloudBackup" appears in the configuration profile, or the restrictions policy on the Apple iOS device from the Apple iOS management tool does not list "iCloud backup not allowed", this is a finding.

Fix text

Install a configuration profile to disable iCloud Backup.

Pro Tips

Lavender hyperlinks in small type off to the right (of CSS class id, if you view the page source) point to globally unique URIs for each document and item. Copy the link location and paste anywhere you need to talk unambiguously about these things.

You can obtain data about documents and items in other formats. Simply provide an HTTP header Accept: text/turtle or Accept: application/rdf+xml.
