The fingerprint reader can be used to authenticate the user in order to unlock the mobile device. At this time, the Apple iOS Touch ID has not been evaluated by the NIAP to confirm it meets the security requirements of the MDFPP or been approved for DoD use on mobile devices. This technology could allow unauthorized users to have access to DoD sensitive data if compromised. By not permitting the use of non-password authentication mechanisms, users are forced to use passcodes that meet DoD passcode requirements.
If the Authorizing Official (AO) has approved the use of Touch ID, this requirement is not applicable. Verify written AO approval is available at the site.
Review configuration settings to confirm "Allow Touch ID to unlock device" is disabled.
This check procedure is performed on both the Apple iOS management tool and the Apple iOS device.
Note: If an organization has multiple configuration profiles, the check procedure must be performed on the relevant configuration profiles applicable to the scope of the review.
In the iOS management tool, verify "Allow Touch ID to unlock device" is unchecked.
